Product Name

The product name is used in many ways throughout the catalog:

  • To identify the product
  • Links to the product detail page
  • Used in the page title for product detail pages
  • Is searchable criteria for the store search engine

All of these uses make it very important to develop good product names. Depending on your product marketing strategy, you may wish to include the manufacturer in the name of the product, or maybe shorthand some of the highlighted features or specs of the product.

If pretty permalinks are set in your WordPress Permalinks Settings, the product permalink is shown below the product name. By default, the permalink is generated from the product name and turned into a clean, URL-safe name. You can adjust the product's permalink "slug" to shorten it or make it more effective at including your marketing keywords.

Categories

Products are shown in the catalog in collected groups known as categories. They are the primary means of organizing your catalog. They have a hierarchical structure, meaning that a category can have sub-categories and/or be a sub-category of another category. Products can be assigned to multiple categories at the same time.

You can add categories that don't currently exist right from the product editor by clicking the Add New Category button:

  • Enter the name for the new category
  • Select a parent category (if needed)
  • Click the Add New Category button again to add it
  • The newly created category appears in the category menu to the right, and can be toggled on to assign the product to it

Categories can also be setup with predefined product templates for product details and variation options to assist in speeding up data entry. Assigning a product to a category that has template presets will automatically copy those templates into the new product (if they do not already exist).

Tags

Tags are a keyword or term that helps describe the product so that it can be found by browsing or searching. Unlike categories, tags have no hierarchy. Enter tags into the entry field. You can enter multiple tags at one time by separating each tag with a comma (,), then click the Add button.

Tags are used in the <meta> tag of the product page, so they have a marketing purpose behind them as well. The most popular tags are collected across your entire catalog to build the Tag Cloud widget.

Summary

The summary is a brief 1-2 sentence description of the product. It can be used to grab shopper's attention in the list view of a category listing, or perhaps be used as the line item description in the shopping cart and on the order receipt. By default, the summary is only shown on the product page.

Description

The description is the full detailed descriptive write-up about the product.

Details & Specs

This is used track individual details/specs of a product. For example, if you are selling a bookshelf, you may want to track the dimensions of height, width, depth and perhaps the number of shelves. Or, for a DVD movie, you might want to track the running time, director, actors, etc.

To add a new details:

  • Click the Add Product Detail button
  • A new entry appears in the menu on the right with a generic name
  • Click on the name of the new entry to edit it
  • Clicking the name of the entry or the arrow to the right of the name will select the detail and a new content area will be displayed
  • Type the content associated with that detail in the content area to the right of the menu of details

When your mouse hovers over a detail name, you will see a move icon appear on the left. You can click-and-hold that icon to drag the detail up and down in the list to customize the order of the details.

Product Images

You can upload multiple images for a product. To add new images:

  • Click the Add New Image button
  • Select the image file from your computer
  • Click the Select button to begin uploading

When the image has finished uploading and processing, a thumbnail will appear.

If your store settings are set to sort product images in a custom order, the first image (top-left) becomes the default image for the product. You can drag the images around to re-order them and set a new default image (when custom order is set for product image order).

Variations

Product variations allow you to track many different variations of a product. A product variation is usually a product that has a number of configurable options that combine into an individual variation of the product. For example, a T-shirt may have size and color options. The combination of size and color create an individual variation.

Option Menus

To setup the list of configurable options for product variations, you create the option menus the shopper will use to select the variations:

  • Click the Add Option Menu button to add a new menu. When viewing the product in the catalog, the product will have a new option menu. By default, when adding a new menu, a generic menu name is set, click the menu name to edit it.
  • Click the menu name or to arrow beside the menu name to select the menu and see the options that will be available in that menu. By default, two generic options are setup for you.
  • Click the names of the options to rename them. Click the Add Option to add a new option to the currently selected menu.

As you add new menu options, the variations price lines are generated for you to correspond to the configuration of the option menus. Changing the names of the options will automatically update all variations that use that include that option name.

With each new menu you create, a new set of variation combinations are created and price lines appear below to correspond to the new menu configuration.

You can change the order of the menus or the menu options by moving your mouse over the menu or menu option and dragging it to the desired new position. The order of where the option name appears in the variations below will be automatically updated to reflect the new order.

Variation Pricing

Each variation price line works the same as the default product pricing. Refer to the Price Types documentation above.
